Air Cadets Assist Marham Sports Event

Cadets ready with the water

Cadets from 42F (King’s Lynn) Sqn Air Training Corps were out in force at RAF Marham on Sunday assisting the Marham Flyers running club in holding its Summer Special 10K run and 30K Duathlon.

The event is held around the iconic airfield perimeter, which, being largely flat and good going allows runners of all abilities to push themselves for personal best times, this year being no exception.

There was an excellent turnout of entrants for both events, with the Lynn Air Cadets providing the athletes water stand and key marshal point.

They also followed the last few entrants at the rear of the pack around the final stages of the course providing much needed support, for which they received plaudits from all, for the way in which they conducted themselves and the enthusiasm they displayed to all participants.

Race Director Gary Walker said “we could not hold these events without volunteer support of which the local Air Cadets, arguably provide the greatest part. On this occasion they also took it upon themselves to cheer on the runners at various points on the course, providing a much-needed boost to those still in the final stages of the run”

The aim of the events is not only to provide our local athletes an excellent venue for a race but also to raise funds for the RAF Benevolent Fund, which this year celebrates this 100th anniversary. The fund provides much needed support to both those serving in the RAF and their families and those ex-service who find themselves in need of help.

The next Marham Flyers event open to the public is the annual New Year’s Eve Run to which the Cadets have already promised their support.

Following the race the cadets were given a close up look at the Tornado aircraft used by the base fire section.
