Sandringham Flower Show Duties

Cadets meet The Price Charles

For twenty years since 1999, the light blue uniforms of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets of 42F (King’s Lynn) Squadron have been seen on parade at the Sandringham Flower Show where they have the honour of meeting, and speaking, with members of the Royal Family.

Before meeting the Royals the cadets have the task of assisting with the parking of the cars of the visitors, thousands of whom flock to this annual show. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother spoke with the cadets in those early years and today the cadets meet and talk with the show’s current Royal Patrons Their Royal Highness’ The Prince Charles and Camilla Duchess of Cornwall.

The politeness, smartness and all round professionalism of the cadets has, over the years, seen their duties increase to now include lowering the Union Flag and raising the Prince of Wales Standard as he arrives on the showground. Cadets now also follow the royal couple as they visit the flower tents and various other marquees to assist with carrying the numerous gifts presented to their Royal Highness’. Additional duties also include assisting on the door of the Sandringham Royal Warrant Holder’s hospitality marquee.

Duties over, the cadets are free to enjoy the shows attractions after a quick change of uniform and a refreshment break at the squadrons civilian committee fundraising stall. Committee Honorary Secretary, Julie Lister commented “This is a fantastic day for 42F’s own cadets but more importantly it is a showcase event for the Air Cadet’s nationally. We get so many good reviews about them from the show visitors.”
