Arden Air Cadets Recruited for the US Union Army

Air Cadets from 2286 (Arden) Squadron recently enjoyed a very unusual weekend at the Midlands History Festival.

Civilian Instructor (CI) Hoddle has been part of a re-enactment group so he arranged for the cadets to do marshalling on the Saturday with a chance to camp over and attend the re-enactment event on Sunday.2286 USo

This fitted in well with the Squadron’s RAF100 Stem project, since it gave the cadets a chance to research historic armour up close. The cadets favourite part appeared to be meeting the ferrets, but they watched Viking and Middle Age skirmishes and handled birds of prey.

Probably the most exciting part of the day though was the artillery lesson from the Union Army. Flight Lieutenant Julie Seymour said; “this was something a bit different but very enjoyable and the cadets learnt lots about the use an make up of armour, which will come in very handy shortly.” The Squadron would like to thank CI Hoddle for organising this, Mrs Mahers and Flight Lieutenant Seymour for help with transport, and the re-enactors, particularly the Union Army, for the experience and the taste of and recipe for “hardtack”.
