The Deepings Raft Race has been happening for many years now, with companies, individuals, communities all building various rafts in the hope of being the quickest team to get their raft through the course. Throughout the years, there has been a variety of rafts, in line with various trends of the time, such as Minions, Nurses, Pirates etc. The event draws crowds in from across the Peterborough and Lincolnshire area.
Peterborough Squadron are asked to assist with the event as the organiser has previous ties to the squadron and supports the community work that the cadets are involved in.
Amongst the duties that the cadets performed were setting out crowd safety barriers, litter picking, other general duties and assisting the organising committee as directed.
Cadets were able to watch the rafts racing down the river, seeing the participants hauling the rafts out of the water just before the half way point to get around the lock and then setting off again.
As part of their Duke of Edinburgh awards, the cadets need to complete certain amount of hours volunteering at community events, supporting the Raft Race ensures that cadets are logging up the required number of hours, whilst also earning a small donation to the squadron for their hard work.
