Cadet Flight Sergeant Jack Hawkins has become the first Central and East Region RAF Air Cadet to fly solo in a glider and gain his Silver Wings since the gliding pause.
Jack accepted the offer of a Gliding Scholarship and qualified for the Gliding Scholarship Silver Wings after a weeks’ intensive training and successfully completing a solo flight at the Central Gliding School, RAF Syerston in Nottinghamshire.
Flying is certainly Jack’s main focus. In addition to his loyalty and hard work at his squadron, 2461 (Sawston) Squadron in Cambridgeshire, Jack spends considerable time as a Staff Cadet at 5 Air Experience Flight, RAF Wittering, helping the other cadets get the most out of the flying experience in the Grob Tutor basic training aircraft.
During the spare time during the Scholarship training, Jack helped out with the Combined Cadet Force Air Cadets who were having a camp at RAF Syerston.
Now that Gliding is well on the way to full recovery, all cadets with flying ambitions and boundless enthusiasm should be getting the paperwork sorted and applying for a sought after Scholarship place.
