‘Top 3 Finish for 1109 Squadron at the Cross Country Championships’

Seventeen cadets from 1109 (Thetford) Squadron took part in the Inter-Squadron Cross Country Championships held at Thetford RFC on Sunday 12th February. The event saw Squadrons from all corners of the Wing compete with the hope of being selected to represent Norfolk and Suffolk Wing at the Regional Competition on the 5th March. 1109
The cadets competed in five categories, Junior Boys and Girls, Youth Boys, Senior Girls and Junior Men over 3.5km and 5.km courses on a mixture of terrain. Nearly half of the cadets in the team competed for the first time, many of which only joined the Squadron at the end of 2016. Cadets James Daykin and Jemimah Bedford were two of these cadets, both of which went home with silver medals following second place team finishes in the Youth Boys and Senior Girls categories respectively.
After submitting full teams in all groups apart from Junior Men, 1109 ran to victory and finished third overall, accumulating nine medals with Cadet Hayley Bingham being selected to represent Norfolk and Suffolk Wing at RAF Cranwell after finishing second place individually.
Squadron Sports Officer, Sergeant Matt Drewry said ‘the Squadrons achievements on the sporting front continue to grow and today saw a group of relatively new cadets represent themselves and 1109 extremely well, with an extra congratulation going to Hayley for finishing 2nd in a very competitive and challenging age category. This is the first sporting event of the year and it has certainly given the cadets grounding for another successful year’.
The cadets look forward to the next Inter-Squadron event which is the Touch Rugby Finals Day on Sunday 7th May.
