Norfolk and Suffolk Wing have become unique in the Corps as three of their staff have been honoured in the 2016 Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
Wing Commander David Miller RAFVR(T), Commanding Officer for Norfolk & Suffolk Wing Air Training Corps, and Squadron Leader Kevin Green RAFVR(T), Deputy Officer Commanding have both been awarded the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2016 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Squadron Leader Jason Allan RAFVR(T), Wing Sector Officer and Sports and Nijmegen Training Officer has been awarded a Commendation from Air Officer Commanding 22 Group (Training). Commendations are awarded to personnel who have demonstrated consistently high standards of efficiency and devotion to duty, over and above that normally expected of them. Commendations are awarded sparingly and only in exceptional circumstances.
Wing Commander Miller has been a member of the Air Training Corps since 1975 when he joined as a cadet at 759 (Beccles) Squadron. He was commissioned in 1981 and served at 759 Squadron as the adjutant. In 1991
David was selected and promoted to Flight Lieutenant and became the unit’s Commanding Officer. After a total of 25 years with Beccles Squadron and on promotion to Squadron Leader he was appointed to a Wing Staff post where he served as a Sector commander and as the Wing Training Officer overseeing the Wings DofE, BTEC, Adventure Training and shooting responsibilities. He took command of the Wing in July 2010.
Wing Commander David Miller said, “I am delighted that Norfolk and Suffolk Wing has been recognised in the Queen’s birthday honours list 2016. The awards to Squadron Leader Green and Squadron Leader Allan are well deserved and a just reward for all their hard work over many years.”
Squadron Leader Green joined 1895 (Cromer) squadron in 1992 before receiving his commission in 1994. He then took command of 222 (Broadland) Squadron in 2001. Kevin joined Wing staff in 2003 when he became
Wing Sports Officer. He was promoted to squadron leader in 2008 before becoming Deputy Officer Commanding the Wing in 2010.
Squadron Leader Green said, “I am very honoured to receive the recognition and I accept it on behalf of all the staff in Norfolk and Suffolk Wing for all the hard work that is done to keep the ATC as the best youth organisation in the UK”
Squadron Leader Allan joined the air cadets in 1987 reaching the rank of Cadet Warrant Officer at 1894 (Swaffham) Squadron. He applied for a VRT commission and
was appointed in July in 1996. He then joined 42F (Kings Lynn) Squadron and became the officer commanding the following year. He remained there until 2003 before moving to 1249 (Dereham) as the squadron commander and during this time was awarded the Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk award for meritorious service. He joined Wing Staff in 2008 as Wing Sports officer before becoming Sports and Nijmegen Officer in 2010 before being promoted to Squadron Leader in 2013
