Cadet Sergeant Hayden Iles of 1109 (Thetford) Squadron Air Cadets was selected to represent the Royal Air Force at last weekend’s Carping4Heroes event held in Biggleswade, Befordshire.
The event, which took place on the 13th – 14th June at Manor Farm Fishery saw teams from the Royal Air Force, Army, Military Provost Guard Service, Veteran’s and Civilian’s compete in a fishing competition in aide of Helping for Heroes.
The Royal Air Force were crowned overall winners taking the title off last year’s champions, the Army, with Hayden winning his overall section with a huge 30lbs! They were awarded with the prestigious ‘Darren Martin Memorial Trophy’, a fitting tribute to a previous participant in the event who sadly passed away recently.
The event raised over £10,000 which is an incredible amount of money and will go to a charity which does so much for our men and women both serving and ex-serving in the armed forces.
Sgt Iles said ‘the weekend was a huge success with the primary aim of the weekend being met, which is supporting Help for Heroes.
These events enable the charity to continually support those in need, as well as their families to reach their full potential which may have been affected in some way by past experiences. It was a privilege representing the Royal Air Force and is an experience I will keep with me for a very long time’.
Sgt Iles is a keen fisher and has fished as part of the RAF Carp Team for the last two years. He would like to thank everyone who kindly sponsored him and supported the event, especially those from 1109 squadron. The RAF Carp Team will work hard over the next twelve months to ensure their title is held.
