Swadlincote Air Cadet’s on Camp with Royal Navy

1211 HMS Bristol 5Opportunities to Fly, Glide and Shoot are open to all members of the Swadlincote RAF Air Cadets; however this Easter they took a different direction and joined the Royal Navy for a week on HMS Bristol in Portsmouth.

With visits to the Naval Dockyard including HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and Henry VIII’s Mary Rose, the Cadets also enjoyed water sports, climbing walls and leadership exercises, Navy style.

1211 HMS Bristol 6Camp Commandant, Charlie Adams told us, “We wanted to give the cadets a chance to take part in activities that don’t often come their way in land locked Derbyshire and a visit to HMS Bristol which was the Navy’s Flag Ship at the end of the Falklands Campaign seemed to fit the bill”

Squadron Adjutant Ruth Morgan added, “Our Cadets get chances to take part in activities which are just not available to anyone else in the South Derbyshire area. Where else can a young teenager take control of an aeroplane and do aerobatics with a Royal Air Force Pilot for free? However for this year’s week long camp we wanted to give them something extra memorable. Maybe some of them may see the Royal Navy as a future career as Swadlincote Cadets gain training which is incredibly useful not only if they join the military but also in civilian life.”
