‘A Trio of Gold Medals for 1109 Squadron’

Sunday 26th February 2017 was a very successful day for three cadets from 1109 (Thetford) Squadron, as they came back to Norfolk with three gold medals after representing Norfolk and Suffolk Wing in the Inter Wing Senior Girls Hockey Championships. The competition, held at RAFC Cranwell, saw the six Wings within Central and East Region battle it out on the hockey field to be crowned Regional Champions.
Following a successful trial session held at Thurston Community College back in January, Cadet Flight Sergeant Georgia Brinkley, Cadet Corporal Larna Smith and Cadet Hayley Bingham formed part of the Norfolk and Suffolk Wing team which overcame tough 1109competition from the remaining five Wings. The team was very experienced, however this was a first hockey representation for Larna and Hayley and it will definitely be one to savour. To top off the day Georgia was selected to attend the Regional trials later this month, hoping to impress the Regional selectors and make it to the Corps competition.
Flight Sergeant Brinkley said, ‘it was a privilege to represent Norfolk and Suffolk Wing once again, and fantastic that we came home with the trophy. The team was exceptional during the competition against some tough teams, and we’re looking forward to retaining the trophy in 2018’.
1109 Squadron have had a number of Wing representations in the early part of 2017. Cadet Warrant Officer Hayden Iles represented Norfolk and Suffolk Wing in the Senior Football competition, whilst Cadet Corporal Callum Brown and Cadet Lewis Haynes travel to RAF Wyton this weekend for the male hockey championships. Later this month five cadets from 1109 head to RAFC Cranwell after being selected for the Wing Junior Rugby team.
Squadron Sports Officer, Sergeant Matt Drewry said, ‘it was been an excellent start to 2017 with sports for 1109, after finishing third overall in last month’s cross country to twelve Wing representations in a matter of months. This year already looks very bright and I’m sure the cadets will continue to achieve great things’.
