1109 (Thetford) Squadron came away from Norfolk & Suffolk Wings Inter-Squadron Six Aside Competition on Sunday 28th June as overall champions, after a 1-0 victory courtesy of cadet Brown’s late winner in the final against four time winners 222 (Broadlands) Squadron.
1109’s team had trained for a month in preparation for the tournament which contributed to an outstanding team performance on the day.
1109 came through a tough six game qualifying stage as group’s winners, winning 4 games whilst only drawing 1 and losing 1. They then overcame 1894 (Swaffham) squadron in the quarter finals before reaching the final by coming from behind to win a dramatic penalty shootout against 301 (Bury St Edmunds) Squadron in the semis.
Team captain, Cadet Sergeant Hayden Iles who contributed five goals throughout the day said, ‘the six aside football tournament was another fantastic sporting achievement for 1109. Everyone’s hard work, determination and team effort paid off, as did the training leading up to the event. It was great to captain the side and score six goals throughout the tournament but most of all, to lift the trophy after winning the final’.
Squadron Sports Officer, Civilian Instructor Daniel Cooper added ‘Getting our name on this trophy was a phenomenal achievement and just goes to show where teamwork and commitment gets you’.
The team’s effort, sportsmanship and professionalism ensured the team left North Walsham in high morale with a trophy the squadron has not won for many years.
