A team of Air Cadets from 1279 (Melton Mowbray) Squadron, South and East Midlands Wing, joined with Air Cadets from 2248 (Rutland) Squadron to help out at the Rutland County Show.
Their day consisted of a range of tasks in a range of weathers! It all started off with heavy rain which made the challenge of setting up horse jumps and manning the rings slightly more difficult but all of the cadets kept smiling and worked through the rain, mud and dirt to keep the horse jumps manned in case a horse knocked them down during a competition.
Other tasks that cadets were assigned to including delivering the packed lunches to the teams of volunteers scattered around the Rutland Showground and assisting packing away the jumps at the end of the day.
One of the favourite tasks was for a lucky group of cadets who were tasked with manning the ‘Shetland Grand National’ event in the main ring. This involved setting up for the race with a series of mini jumps and then getting the chance to watch the competition as it unfolded, they even managed to get a couple of photos with some of the Shetland Ponies.
Flying Officer Daniel McGlynn RAFVR(T), Squadron Second in Command, commented, “All of the cadets have done themselves very proud – they acted with such professionalism. Even when they were drenched through because of the rain and they were covered in mud, they all continued to smile and completed any task asked of them. They did a great job!”
